Open Box: What does it mean and how to make the most of it

If you're just starting out in the world of CrossFit, chances are you've heard of or read about the term "Open Box" on your class workout chart, but have no idea what it might be.

If you don't know what it is, don't worry. In this post, we’ll tell you what an Open Box is in CrossFit and how you can use it to get the most out of your training routines.

What is an Open Box in CrossFit?

The term “Open Box” in CrossFit refers mainly to free training, meaning you have access to both the equipment and the box facilities to exercise. But remember, this type of training is not directed.

In an Open Box, athletes must follow several rules of etiquette which are usually set by the box coach. These rules are to avoid crowding and/or interrupting the training of other groups that are in a class.

Making the most of the Open Box for training will yield many advantages, including the following:

  • If you missed a WOD one week, you can do it during your Open Box session.
  • You can practice stretching and mobility, which are both very important to avoid future injuries. Our mobility pack can help you!
  • An Open Box in CrossFit allows you to have time to improve those exercises or skills which you are lacking the most in, or to reinforce those that you are best at.
  • Another way to make the most of an Open Box is to use it to do your own workouts, especially for those who are more experienced in the world of CrossFit... or even to prepare for a competition.

Alternatively, you can use the Open Box for active recovery sessions in which light cardiovascular exercises are done for muscle recovery after an intense workout session.
